Coloring Eggs

There are a few traditions that Gavin and I have in common one of them is coloring Easter eggs the Swiss way.  It is not your typical method... it takes a little more work, but the result is always beautiful!

Start with raw eggs (farm eggs take on the colors a lot better than store bought) and wrap them with flowers, weeds, leaves etc...

Boil in Red Root (root of a weed) or onion skins for 20 minutes.

Unwrap....

and ta da!! Swiss Easter Eggs!

This year after we had finished cooking the eggs, Garrett decided we needed to start our own family egg busting tradition. I will be happy to announce that my egg was the stoutest!

You made me jealous! We always colored our Easter eggs this way too (thanks to being from good ol' Santa Clara!) and since I've moved away I haven't been able too. I'll have to show Phill these pics because I was explaining it to him yesterday when we were coloring eggs the lame way and he didn't understand! Thanks for posting these pics! You brought back fun memories!

It is always fun to color the eggs that way. This is the first year since I can remember that we didn't do it. Your eggs turn out great:)

Love those red roots and onion skins when it comes to Easter. I am glad you are keeping the tradition alive.(Even if I could hardly get you to wrap one egg a few years ago!!)

Those eggs are so cool; I’ve never done them that way! We love family traditions at our house...it makes holidays a little more memorable.

Oh how I miss that tradition. Everything is dead here! We have nothing to wrap our eggs with except twigs and that surly won't work. My kids have never seen this family tradition and this is one I loved! They look Beautiful!!!
